چکیده

Surface second harmonic generation has been used to study the adsorption of alkyl phenols and anilines and their respective ions to the air/water interface. The free energies of adsorption of the neutral molecules were obtained using a simple Langmuir model. The quantitative effects of the opposing hydrophobic and solvations forces on molecular adsorption were investigated by varying the chain length of alkylphenolate and alkylanilinium ions. An alkyl chain of at least five carbons was found to be necessary to balance the bulk ionic solvation and thereby bring the ion interface population to a level above the water background. The adsorption of the ions can be described quantitatively by using a modified Langmuir model that includes the electrostatic free energy of the electric double layer as given by the GouyChapmann theory. From the excellent fit of the second harmonic data to this treatment, the chemical and electrostatic free energies of adsorption, interface electric potential, and interface pH were obtained.

Preferential Solvation of Fenofibrate in (Ethanol or Acetone) + Water Mixtures at 298.15 K

The aim of this communication was to expand the results of numerical analyses performed by Sun et al. on their experimental solubility of fenofibrate in aqueous mixtures of ethanol and acetone at 298.15 K, in terms of the evaluation of the preferential solvation of this compound by the organic solvents and water in the saturated mixtures based on the inverse Kirkwood-Buff integrals (IKBI). ...

Effect of Solute Orientation on Solvation Dynamics at the Air/Water Interface

The ultrafast solvation dynamics of courmarin 314 (C314) molecules at the air/water interface has been shown to depend on their orientation with respect to the plane of the interface. A pump/second harmonic probe method using femtosecond laser pulses were used to measure the interface solvation dynamics. The pump light was S polarized, i.e., in the interface plane, or P polarized, i.e., in the ...

Adsorption of thiocyanate ions to the dodecanol/water interface characterized by UV second harmonic generation.

Recent experimental and theoretical results have firmly established the existence of enhanced concentrations of selected ions at the air/water interface. Ion adsorption to aqueous interfaces involving complex organic molecules is relevant to biology in connection with the familiar but incompletely understood Hofmeister effects. Here, we describe resonant UV second harmonic generation (SHG) stud...

Studies of Molecular Properties at the Surface of a Liquid Jet by Second Harmonic Generation

We report the use of second harmonic generation (SHG) to study kinetics of adsorption of p-nitrophenol at the air/water interface of a flowing jet. Measurements of the SH signal strength and the polarization of the SH light at various distances (times) along the jet axis yield information about the development of the population density and orientation of nitrophenol at the air/ water interface....

Molecular dynamics study of small PNA molecules in lipid-water system.

We present the results of molecular dynamics simulations of small peptide nucleic acid (PNA) molecules, synthetic analogs of DNA, at a lipid bilayer in water. At neutral pH, without any salt, and in the NP(n)gammaT ensemble, two similar PNA molecules (6-mers) with the same nucleic base sequence and different terminal groups are investigated at the interface between water and a 1-palmitoyl-2-ole...
